Students at Slippery Rock University competed in a scavenger hunt March 14, 2005, for a chance to throw a pie in the face of a math professor at the school.

The deadline for answers for the scavenger hunt was 1:59 p.m. on March 14 — the first six digits of pi (3.14159).

The scavenger hunt included 12 hints such as “find a place where pi is mentioned in the Bible”; “in what year did the Indiana State Legislature try to regulate the value of pi?"; and “who directed the movie 'Pi’?”

Recognized by math teachers worldwide, Pi Day enables math classes to break from the normal routine and plan events in honor of the number. March 14 is also Albert Einstein's birthday.
