SRU’s Atkins named Freshman of Year

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University’s Regan Atkins was recently named the PSAC West Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Year.

Atkins became the first Rock player to win that award since Becky Siembak in 2000.

Atkins started all 25 games for SRU and scored a team-high 381 points. She also averaged 5.4 rebounds per game and and sank 21 treys. She averaged 15.2 points per game, fourth among all freshmen in Division II.

Falter shines in Pirates’ 1-0 loss

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Pirates left-hander Bailey Falter retired 11 of the 13 batters he faced in 3.2 scoreless innings on Monday in his team’s 1-0 Grapefruit League loss to the Boston Red Sox.

Billy McKinney played six innings in center field for the Bucs, collecting one hit. He has reached base safely in all 11 games he’s played this spring.

The Pirates play the Braves at 1:05 p.m. Tuesday in Bradenton.
