Officer struck after altercation involving knife; 2 charged
Charges were filed against a man who went after someone with a machete-style knife and the woman who assisted him who later injured a responding officer, according to city police.
George W. Willis III, 35, and Candace R. Winstead, 49, both of Butler, were charged Monday, March 4, with felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor terroristic threats following a disturbance in a West New Castle Street apartment building.
Winstead additionally was charged with misdemeanor resisting arrest and summary harassment, after police said she used her knee to strike a police officer.
According to documents, police initially responded to the apartment complex Monday afternoon for a report of a man threatening a landlord with a knife. The landlord said the incident began when she encountered Willis in the hallway during apartment inspections.
Police said Willis was staying in an apartment at the complex despite being told he could not reside there and was not on the lease. When the landlord spoke to Willis in the hallway about this, he brandished a large knife, documents said.
Police said Willis told the landlord he would “slice her throat,” before charging up the stairs and pointing the knife at her. Documents indicated Winstead was pushing the landlord while this occurred.
The landlord was able to ascend the staircase and escape, and police said Willis threw the knife at her before he went into the apartment where he was staying. He later retrieved the knife, according to police.
Willis was found in the apartment later and taken into custody, police said. Winstead was located by police and was told she was being detained for the investigation, documents showed.
Winstead did not provide her information to police, pulled away from police while being placed in handcuffs, and kneed a police officer on the lower part of his body, according to police.
When interviewed later, police said Winstead disclosed she was “going to help Willis kill (the landlord).”
Willis was placed in Butler County Prison in lieu of $50,000 and Winstead was placed in the prison in lieu of $75,000. Their preliminary hearings have not yet been scheduled.
