Bridge reopened on Butler Freeport Trail after volunteers attach railing
After two Saturdays of work, groups of volunteers have finished putting together the new railing for the Monroe Bridge on the Butler-Freeport Community Trail, making it safe to reopen to walkers.
The finishing touches on the new railing were put in place on Saturday, March 2, allowing it to reopen. The bridge had been closed for an overhaul since mid-January.
“We had to wait for materials and pour the concrete,” said Chris Ziegler, president of the Butler-Freeport Community Trail Council. “Winter is usually the slow time of year for hiking.”
Before the volunteers put together the bridge’s railing over two Saturdays, the bridge received a new wooden deck courtesy of contractor Hiles Excavating.
