Living on a 'fixed income’

I read with interest the article by Zach Petroff about the mobile home park Oak Springs (“Cranberry holds informational meeting for Oak Springs community members,” Feb. 1) and their 42% rent increase on lot fees in their community.

While it is a huge increase, not much can be done as this is a private agreement between owner and tenants. A 42% increase is sobering. Many may have to seek other living arrangements due to this increase. It is a sad situation for the residents.

I do take issue with the reporting that most residents are “on a fixed income.” I know the phrase is often used to describe people who are older, retired and drawing from Social Security and their retirement funds. What it implies is that working folks have a “non-fixed” income, which is quite untrue.

If someone lived in Oak Springs and is working full time, could they upon learning their monthly expenses are going up by 42%, go to their boss and request a salary increase to cover the increased living expenses? I don’t think so.

All of us live on “fixed incomes.” My resources are not unlimited, and a 42% increase could be a game-changer for retired and working folks alike.

Fixed income and non-fixed income are illusions. We all must live within our means. There is something to be said about being an owner and not a renter to have ultimate control over one’s expenses. Good article and good reporting.
