Winter weather could return Thursday
After unseasonably warm temperatures and two days of heavy rain and thunderstorms, weather in Butler County could be settling back to winter norms by Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in Butler fell to 37 degrees by Wednesday afternoon, with light snowfall expected to start by late afternoon and proceed into early Thursday morning.
Meteorologist David Shallenberger with the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh expect the northern parts of the county to receive the bulk of the snow.
“We have around a half-inch to an inch and a half in Butler County,” said meteorologist Shallenberger. “And then central Butler County, maybe half an inch at most.”
Wednesday in Butler also brought winds of about 20 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Those winds are expected to persist into Thursday, but settle to around 11 to 14 mph.
Temperatures in Butler are expected to hit a high of 37 degrees on Thursday, with a low of 22 degrees by Thursday night — a break from the unseasonably high temperatures from earlier this week.
“We had a low-pressure system start to develop in the Central Plains, and it moved east,” Shallenberger said. “We had temperatures going up into the 70s in some places, so that certainly can happen this time of year. It’s uncommon in February, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility.”
