48th Spring Thaw race Feb. 24

It’s never been canceled in 47 years — not for bad weather, bad viruses or anything else that might shut down a road race. The 48th Spring Thaw is set to run its laps around North Park Lake at 10 a.m. on Feb. 24 .

Spring Thaw was born in the days of the first running boom to offer local distance runners an opportunity to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Marathoners Tom Abbot and Harry Kucherer created the First Annual Boston Marathon Qualifier Marathon in scenic North Park. The event had 24 finishers but by 2000, participation had increased to nearly 200.

The race eventually evolved from a full 26.2 marathon to a multi-distance event of 10, 15 and 20-mile runs in consecutive loops around North Park Lake. Last year, Spring Thaw added a 5-mile distance to the line-up. This new distance is second only to the 10-mile in participation. Race director Matt Imhof speculates that the shorter distances are more popular because Spring Thaw’s February date is still early in runners’ training cycles when they haven’t hit their peak endurance.

Imhof took over as race director in 2020. He’s only the third director in the event’s long history after Mark Courtney and Kevin Smith.

At its peak in the mid-2000s, Spring Thaw saw peak participation numbers above 1,000. Based on last year’s numbers and this year’s sign-ups so far, Imhof expects more than 600 runners.

He urges everyone to register online for the event though there will be in-person registration along with packet pickup from 4 to 7 p.m. Feb. 21 at Pro Bike+Run in North Park. Although Matt highly discourages day-of-event registration, last minute sign-ups open at 8:30 a.m. on race day unless the event sells out first.

All registered runners will receive commemorative socks and finishers earn hats. Top three men and women, top masters runners in the 10-Mile and top runners in age groups in all distances earn stuffed teddy bear awards. All finishers are rewarded with hot soup and refreshments following the event.

Runners in all the distances line up together and follow the same 5-mile loop around the lake. There will be pacers for various paces for the 10 and 15-mile distances. Visit runsignup.com/Race/Info/PA/AllisonPark/TheSpringThaw for details.

Pet dogs are not allowed on the course, but participants with service animals may contact Imhof for special accommodations. Strollers are permitted, but requested to line up in the back of the pack. Imhof advises parents to keep in mind that although the course is paved and gently rolling, the race runs next to park road traffic for several miles which may be unpleasant for stroller-riders.

There are three aid stations per 5-mile loop on the course offering water and Gatorade. And GU is available at the station just past the Boathouse. Check out course and aid station details at the Runsignup.com site.

If you’re not able to “go the distance” for 5 to 20 miles, Imhof says they always need volunteers for a large event like Spring Thaw. Check out the Runsignup race site for volunteer opportunities from bag check to helping at aid stations, post-race food distribution to clean-up.

For the first time in the event’s long history, donations will benefit 412 Food Rescue. This is part of GCXC Timing’s focus on making charity a part of every one of their events in 2024.

412 Food Rescue, with the help of 20,000+ volunteers, has picked up over 26 million pounds of surplus food from food retailers and delivered the equivalent of 21.6 million meals to non-profit partners serving local people in need. For more information about this charity and how to get involved, visit 412foodrescue.org.

Matt Imhof’s parting advice for Spring Thaw is to arrive early and carpool if possible since there is limited parking at North Park Boathouse and to have a fun race.

On a sad note, the world lost a legend when marathon world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum died in a car accident in western Kenya last Sunday. Kiptum, age 24, had broken the world marathon record four months ago with his finishing time of 2:00:35 at the Chicago Marathon.
