Jonathan Evans, M.D.

Evans

Jonathan Lynn Evans, M.D., passed away peacefully in the arms of Jesus on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024.

He was born on Oct. 20, 1947, in Youngstown, Ohio, and spent his seasons of life in Western Pennsylvania, where he grew up and raised his family, and Lexington, N.C., where he concluded his days with courage and love for his family. He graduated from Mount Lebanon High School, Grove City College and Columbia Medical School, and was certified in internal medicine, radiology and pulmonology. During his training, he met the love of his life, Joyce Harriet Gilmore. Over 50 years, this faithful couple built a partnership of love, laughter and generosity that has impacted those they met. None more so than their children and grandchildren, who were lavished with love and given purpose through the abiding faith lived out by this couple's legacy of Christ-centered life.

Jonathan was ever playful, quick with a joke and a smile to encourage another. His servant's heart could often be found lending a hand or an ear to anyone in need. His quiet, thoughtful wisdom became foundational for those he led in his work, his church and his home. Jonathan volunteered at Seneca Hills Bible Camp and Retreat Center, Community Alliance Church and Butler Memorial Hospital. His generosity supported countless causes and many individuals who crossed his path. Though never a fan of attention, Jonathan's gifts of service illuminated his authentic and personal faith.

Jon loved to be active and outdoors, surrounded by close friends and family. He was an avid skier and scuba diver and enjoyed bike-riding, tennis and any sort of pickup game in the yard. Like his father before him, Jon loved to work with his hands, carving out gifts of furniture or beautiful outdoor spaces. His thoughtful nature also created a deep love for ideas and the written word. Often, he was settled in his study with a large volume and a notebook or found deep in conversation. He was also a gifted teacher, benefiting not only his children, but his church and workplaces. At every turn, one of his beloved dogs could be found at his side.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joyce; his children, Stefanie Rudnicke (Paul), Lisa Mathewson (Christopher) and Mark Evans (Virginia); his niece, Melinda Berdyck (Jon); his eight grandchildren, Hannah, William, Adam, Luke, Elizabeth, Abigail, Jack and Mae; and countless other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall and Josephine Evans; and his sister, Marcia Sutherland (Ren).

The family would like to thank the staff of Homestead Hills Skilled Nursing Care, those at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, and all those who have prayed and cared for them.
