Twenty-seven years ago, Carol Lambert retired as principal at Slippery Rock Area Elementary School.
“I needed to find something to do,” she said. “This community had been so good to me and my husband over the years, I felt it was my responsibility to give back.”
Lambert became involved with the Feed My Sheep food cupboard in Slippery Rock in 1997. Now the coordinator, she oversees distribution of food to approximately 125 families.
The food cupboard, originally located in Harrisville, moved to Slippery Rock Community Park in 1990.
“We serve the northern half of the Slippery Rock Area School District,” she said. “We accept donations here, but also have trucks coming in from Pittsburgh once per month and several trucks from Butler.”
Lambert said between 30 and 35 volunteers help to run the operation, which includes making deliveries to people unable to travel to the park.
“We give out extra food in November, everything to make a Thanksgiving dinner, and we do the same in December for Christmas,” she said. “Slippery Rock University is always holding food drives. A lot of the sports teams there help us out. It's benefited us greatly to have a college in town.”
The cupboard also accepts monetary donations.
“The checks come in and sometimes I just want to sit down and cry,” added Lambert. “This is a very giving community. We're generously blessed.”
