More than 100 pigs die in 1970 barn fire

Firefighters from four volunteer companies battled a barn fire Jan. 5, 1970, which resulted in the death of 102 pigs.

A fire burned down a cinder block barn on Jan. 5, 1970, after pigs in a barn on Butler Road knocked an electric heating lamp onto some straw.

The Vadnal farm lost 102 pigs that day, with only one pig escaping after Jane Vadnal opened the door to the barn to discover the smoke and some fire at around 1:30 p.m. Vadnal broke a window to ventilate some air for the pigs, but it fanned the flames.

Firefighters from four volunteer companies fought the fire and contained it to the bottom floor of the 5-year-old structure. Damage to the building was estimated to be $500, but in addition to the loss of pig lives, their deaths cost the farm an estimated $2,100.
