Vargo strikes for 29 points

Mars guard sparks Planets to victory

Behind 29 points from Vita Vargo, Mars edged Kiski Area 52-51 in girls basketball play on Friday.

Vargo drained five treys in the win, Mya Moore came up with a clutch block on the defensive end late in the game and Alexis Cashdollar made several free throws to help Mars (4-2) take the lead for good.

The Cavaliers received 27 points and seven 3-pointers from Abbie Johns.

Moniteau 44, North Clarion 25 — The Warriors built a 12-point lead by halftime, then allowed just seven points to the Wolves in the final two periods to secure this win.

Catherine Kelly netted 16 points and six steals for Moniteau (5-1). Abbey Jewart added six rebounds and four steals, Kendall Sankey five assists.

Seneca Valley 56, Neshannock 24 — Natalie Hambly’s 18 points, including four treys, led the Raiders to this win on Thursday.

Emerson Peffer added 10 points for SV (4-2).

Redbank Valley 48, Karns City 47 (OT) — A 3-pointer from Brooklynn Taylor was all the Gremlins managed in overtime against the host Bulldogs.

Chloe Fritch scored 13 points in the loss and Taylor added 11.

Redbank was paced by Mylee Harmon’s 26 points.

Boys Basketball

Josh Book unloaded 25 points and added 14 rebounds as Slippery Rock doubled up visiting Perry, 68-34.

Levi Prementine scored 20 and had five steals while Max Kovacik added eight points in the win.

Ryan Ceh tallied 17 points and Remi Black contributed 11 for Mars (2-3).

Fox Chapel 54, Seneca Valley 50 — A rally by the Raiders (2-4) came up short against the Foxes.

Kai West scored 19 to lead SV and Andrew Omasits added 10 points.

North Catholic 88, Ambridge 45 — A 30-point first quarter paved the way to this road win for the Trojans (3-1).

Max Hurray scored 20 points for North, Wills Kontul added 13 and Jason Siket 12.

Armstrong 66, Freeport 44 — The Yellowjackets (2-4) got nine points from Brady Sullivan.

Swimming

Mars’ Preston Heynes earned a WPIAL cut in the 200-yard freestyle, but the Planet boys fell to Hampton, 90-39, on Thursday.
