Frederick Slagle

Slagle

Frederick Leroy “Fred” Slagle, 77, of Rockingham, N.C., formerly of Butler, passed away in the comfort of his home, while in the company of his loving wife Thursday morning, Nov. 30, 2023.

Frederick was born in Kittanning, on March 25, 1946. He was the son of Elsie Anderson Slagle and the late Jerry L. Slagle.

He was a 1964 graduate of Ford City High School. He was a star baseball pitcher who dreamed of the major leagues. Fred was a proud U.S. Army veteran, having served in Vietnam, and was a Bronze Star recipient in the same operation for which his commanding officer received a Medal of Honor.

Fred enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting, fishing and working in his yard. When his wife could not find him, he could often be found on his tractor. He watched baseball daily, was an avid Yankees fan and lamented the time between seasons as the worst part of every year. He had retired from UPS as a delivery driver, which he usually enjoyed, except for the holiday rush.

Fred is survived by his wife, Sonya McGuire Slagle, whom he married in Las Vegas, Nev., on May 22, 1998. Also surviving are his mother, Elsie Slagle of Templeton; a son, Jared Slagle, and his wife Michelle, of Washington, N.C.; a daughter, Janine Hilliard, and her husband, Bill, of Ford City; a stepdaughter, Sarah Frazer, and her husband, Lt. Col. Jeffrey Nephew, of Fort Liberty, N.C.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Jerry Slagle, and his wife, Sharon; two sisters, Cheryl Delaney, and her husband, Bill, and Lisa Tomkiewicz, and her husband, Charles; as well as a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and brothers-in-law.
