Beighley blasts off for KC
Karns City guard Taite Beighley began his senior season with a bang, scoring 16 points, dishing out 14 assists and grabbing six rebounds to lead the Gremlins to a 78-62 victory over Sharpsville at A-C Valley High School on Friday.
The Gremlins owned a 23-9 lead after one quarter and were up 61-38 after three periods.
Jacob Callihan scored 23 points for KC, Luke Cramer tallied 19 and Shane Peters 10 points and seven rebounds. Beighley added five steals.
Mars 74, Franklin 68 — At the Sharon Tip-Off Tournament, Mars received a heavy dose of balanced scoring in defeating the Knights.
Ryan Ceh scored 21 points, Austin Campbell had 20, Remi Black 15 and Drew Navetta 14.
Warren 65, Union 48 — Following a 19-point first quarter, Union cooled off in dropping this decision to the Dragons at the Brookville Tip-Off Tournament.
Trey Fleming scored 15 points to lead the Golden Knights and Dawson Camper added 12.
North East 44, A-C Valley 29 — The Falcons never got going in dropping this opener at home.
Jay Clover scored 11 points in defeat.
Hampton 67, Seneca Valley 40 — Tyler Pepin scored 12 points and Kai West 11 for the Raiders.
Girls Basketball
The Zach Stitt-era began in impressive fashion at Mars as the Planets dominated Laurel, 66-20, at the Slippery Rock Tournament.
The Planets, who led 46-10 at halftime, received 16 points from Vita Vargo and 11 courtesy of Cecilia Christy.
North Catholic 56, Upper St Clair 44 — The Trojanettes led by eight at halftime before closing out this season-opening win against the Panthers.
Alayna Rocco paced North with 19 points, Sarah Loughry added 12 and Ava Walker 10.
Armstrong 49, Knoch 24 — The Knights hung with the host River Hawks in the first half, but were outscored 22-5 over the final two quarters.
Adah Fuller paced Knoch with nine points and Karlee Buterbaugh added eight points.
Punxsutawney 44, Karns City 19 — Phoebe Brandon scored 11 points to lead the Gremlins.
Bowling
Freeport’s girls swept Armstrong, 7-0, with Olivia Svitek leading the way with a high game of 202 and series of 596.
In the boys competition, the Yellowjackets were swept. Colin Cummings rolled games of 226 and 216 and a series of 635 for Freeport.
