Braun

George Warren Braun, 80, of Mercer Island, Wash., went home to be with his Lord on Oct. 31, 2023, after courageously battling pancreatic cancer and Alzheimer's disease. He was born on Feb. 23, 1943, in Butler, to Dorothy Kennedy Braun and Irvin Braun.

George graduated from Butler High School in 1961 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from Penn State in 1965. He had a successful career at Armco Steel for many years. While living in Butler, he was active with the Jaycees and was named Butler Chamber of Commerce’s Junior Distinguished Man of the Year in 1973, for establishing Camp George and his work benefiting special needs children and the Special Olympics.

In 1976, George transferred to Armco's Baltimore Works where he worked until retirement in 1998. He married Gail Cupps in 1978, becoming a loving stepfather to her three teenagers who came to call him Dad. The couple enjoyed sailing on the Chesapeake Bay for many years.

In 2013, they moved to Leland, N.C., where they became members of Grace United Methodist Church. George was most happy when he was active. If he wasn’t out working in the yard, building something in the garage or on the pickleball courts, you would find him volunteering at Grace UMC. In 2022, they moved to Mercer Island to be near family during the final stages of his life.

George is survived by his wife, Gail; children, Jeff Cupps, and his wife, Debbie, Michael Cupps and his wife, Wendy, and Elizabeth George and her husband, Michael; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A family celebration of life will be held on Nov. 24, 2023, at the home of Beth and Michael George. Family from Washington, Maryland, California, Massachusetts and Colorado will be gathered for this private ceremony.
