Love it or hate it, the TV show “Friends” was a cultural phenomena that remains unmatched in terms of popular entertainment. Chances are you’ve seen at least one episode, or alternatively, you scream “PIVOT!” anytime you rearrange your living room.
“Friends” fans are spread across various backgrounds and ages since the show explores the universal experience of camaraderie. This explains why the loss of actor Matthew Perry, who portrayed Chandler Bing, is so heavily felt.
Chandler was my favorite character, mainly because I also tell jokes when I’m uncomfortable. Perry’s role represented the “everyman,” a guy who works a normal job, is so afraid of confrontation that he can’t quit the gym, and is plagued by an annoying ex-girlfriend he can’t seem to shake.
What Perry did so well with Chandler Bing was prove that the guy who represents everybody, is somebody all his own. He showed it’s OK to be scared and to laugh at yourself. On and off-screen, the general consensus is that Perry’s jokes were as consistent as they come.
In his memoir, Perry wanted to be remembered as someone who helped others. Based on how his character effected so many lives, I think it’s safe to say he was always “there for you.”
