Final 5 prepare for playoff debuts

For six local high school football teams, the season is over. The other five are preparing for the first week of the postseason.

While I love the week leading into the start of the regular season — at that point, it's been nine months since the end of the previous campaign — nothing beats playoff football. Teams have earned their spot and beginning Friday, it's win or go home.

High stakes often lead to high drama on the gridiron and I'm anxious to see how I stack up in the playoffs. I was 8-1 last week and am 83-22 on the season.

Chartiers Valley at Mars — The Planets are part of a loaded Class 4A playoff field, with Aliquippa, McKeesport, Montour, Central Valley and North Catholic lurking in the bracket.

Mars will have its hands full in the near future, but not this week against the 13th-seeded Colts.

Score: Mars 38-9

South Park at Knoch — The Knights are in the playoffs for the first time since 2014. They have a balanced offense, which can not be said of the Eagles.

If Knoch stops the run, which I believe it will, the Knights will win.

Score: Knoch 25-14

North Catholic vs. Trinity — Nobody likes to lose, but there are a lot of positives the Trojans can take from last week's 17-14 defeat to Mars. It was the only Greater Allegheny Conference game which the Planets didn't dominate this season.

I like North to take care of business against the Hillers.

Score: North Catholic 23-15

Karns City vs. Brookville — The Gremlins have been through a lot this season. Starting with the horrible injury to Mason Martin in the second week, KC has had a number of chances to throw in the towel.

But here it is, one win away from playing for a District 9 title. The Gremlins must feel like they're playing with house money and that mind-set is very dangerous to play against.

Brookville won this matchup in the regular season, 44-14, but the Raiders better prepare for a much closer game in the rematch.

Score: Brookville 27-21

Union/A-C Valley at Brockway — Another rematch from earlier this season when the Falcon Knights topped the Rovers 12-7.

Union/A-C Valley has a lot of talent, but I see it falling short in its bid for another upset.

Score: Brockway 28-16

Scoop is looking to fly high for another week
