Olympic Day is a great team-building opportunity

The students of Ryan Gloyer Middle School in Jackson Township were provided an excellent opportunity recently to work on skills not easily learned in a classroom with Olympic Day.

As we learned in the Sunday, Oct. 15, edition of the Butler Eagle, nearly the entire student body took time away from the classroom to take part in friendly competition. They learned lessons in team work and had some fun in the process.

They also learned a bit of geography. The students were broken up into teams that represented real countries. Eighth grade math teacher Kaylene Ireland’s class “begged for Ireland,” which couldn’t have been more fun.

Some events were traditional Olympic events: soccer, curling, swimming, track and field.

Other events were less traditional, including Scrabble, football throwing, airplane tossing.

The selection of events should not be quickly glazed over. Some people are more physical, others are more Scrabble adept. Some may be good at throwing a shot put, others a paper plane. It’s important to have something for everyone in a situation like this. Anything to bring an entire student body together.

One team even held a fundraiser, selling vuvuzelas. The instruments were played incessantly over the course of the day.

The staff and administrators at Ryan Gloyer should be commended for Olympic Day. Spending an entire day bringing students together in the spirit of teamwork is time well spent.
