Two die in Winfield Township crash Friday
A 65-year-old Cabot man and his 12-year-old grandson died in a two-vehicle crash Friday night in Winfield Township, according to state police.
David A. Faulx and Zane Rupert, of Saxonburg, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at the intersection of Winfield and Brose roads.
Zane Rupert was identified in a social media post from the Saxonburg Spartans youth football league. He was a member of the Spartans’ 12-and-under football team, according to the post.
“He was a force on the team and was vital on our line,” the post reads. “To say that he will be missed isn’t adequate. The impact he has had on those around him will be long felt. Our sincerest condolences to Zane’s family, his teammates and coaches.”
The post calls him a son, brother and friend.
A vigil was planned for 8:15 Saturday night at New Life Christian Ministries on Knoch Road for anyone who wanted to attend. Ministers were on hand for children or parents to talk to regarding the fatalities.
The 1999 Jeep Wrangler that Faulx was driving was traveling north on Winfield Road when it rounded a sharp right hand curve, crossed into the southbound lane and hit a semi-truck trailer head on, police said. The Jeep landed upside down. Faulx was not wearing a seat belt, but Zane was, police said.
The truck driver, Hunter Cathcart, 29, of Clarion, suffered minor injuries, but was not taken to a hospital, police said. He was wearing a seat belt.
According to Butler County Emergency Services, the accident occurred at the intersection of Winfield and Brose roads at 9:55 p.m.
The Saxonburg and Buffalo Township volunteer fire companies and Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company Ambulance Service responded to the accident. Police and emergency responders were at the scene for nearly four hours.
