Therapy dog coming to SR high school

PROSPECT — Bailey Karwoski might be one of the latest hires at Slippery Rock Area High School.

An Irish doodle mix, Bailey will join students on eight selected club/activity days as a certified therapy dog, Superintendent Alfonso Angelucci said.

Board directors approved a proposal for the certified therapy dog at a meeting on Monday.

According to a resume made available to board directors, Bailey has kept busy working as a therapy dog since her certification in 2022. She has participated in therapy visits and holiday events at Concordia Lutheran Ministries, Magnolia Place Nursing Home, Slippery Rock University and Rhodes Estates.

The therapy dog’s start at the high school will be considered a pilot program, Angelucci said.

The successes of a therapy dog program at Slippery Rock Area Elementary School drove the school board to consider implementing a pilot program at the high school, he said.

Stephanie Karwoski, guidance counselor at Slippery Rock Area High School, is Bailey’s handler.
