Butler boys golf reaches WPIAL final
By tallying 400 strokes and placing third, Butler’s boys golf team advanced from Tuesday’s WPIAL Class 3A Team Semifinal, held at The Links at Spring Church.
Scoring for Butler were Hunter Swidzinski (71), Wyatt Kos (77), Boden Lenyk (79), Levi McClellan (84), Jase Renwick (89) and Blake Scott (89).
The top three teams move on to the WPIAL final, scheduled Thursday at Cedarbrook Gold Golf Course. Peters Township (392) and Indiana (398) join the Golden Tornado in extending their season.
The field for the championship will also include Fox Chapel, North Allegheny and South Fayette, all three advancing from the other semifinal held at Duck Hollow Golf Course.
In the Class 2A semifinal at Beaver Valley Golf Club, Knoch and Freeport both carded a 420, tying for fourth place and just missing out on qualifying for the district final.
Knoch’s golfers included Mason Phillips (80), Jeremy Scheidt (81), Aiden Froedtert (82), Aaron Voltz (83) and Jacob Stallsmith (94).
Scoring for the Yellowjackets were Aiden Bauman (82), Stephen Evans (82), Cam Zigo (85), Matt Ziembicki-Reedy (85) and Jayden Diehl (86).
The three teams to advance are Mohawk (406), Neshannock (407) and Quaker Valley (409).
Girls Soccer
Brooke Arblaster and Aiva Reich both scored in Slippery Rock’s 2-1 win over Hickory.
Emily Plyler and Arblaster both contributed an assist.
Freeport 10, Valley 0 — Camryn Woods and Lizzy Parsi both scored twice in this victory.
Also scoring for the Yellowjackets (10-1-1, 7-1-1) were Samantha Liput, Peyton Los, Nia DiSanti, Ava Slaughenhoupt, Kendyll Schreckengost and Lorelei Buterbaugh.
Alyssa Acorn earned the shutout in net.
Butler 3, Shaler 1 — Leah Deal, Leah Weiland and Cecelia Wolford scored for the Golden Tornado (10-6). Delaney Yaracs made the save on a penalty kick with two minutes remaining.
Mars 5, Indiana 0 — The Planets remained undefeated with this Monday win. Mars hosts Kiski Area at 6 p.m. Wednesday in its last regular season home game.
Karns City 2, DuBois Area 0 — Hanna Dailey had one goal and one assist and teammate Phoebe Brandon also scored for KC (13-1-1).
Ava Kamenski added an assist and Savanna Prescott earned the shutout.
Girls Volleyball
Ava Fox had seven digs and four kills for Karns City in a 3-0 loss to DuBois Area on Monday. Match scores were 25-11, 25-11, 25-16. Haylie Karenbauer and Cayley Craig had two kills each.
Nicole Taylor had three digs and two kills, Ashley Mauer six assists and three digs, Brooke Rumbaugh five assists in a losing cause.
Clarion 3, Karns City 0 — The Gremlins fell by scores of 25-17, 26-24 and 25-15.
Ava Fox tallied eight kills and nine digs in defeat. Naomi Venesky added four kills.
Nicole Taylor contributed 12 digs, Ashley Mauer 10 assists and seven digs and Jaysa Capone five digs.
Moniteau 3, Union 0 — The Warriors claimed this match by scores of 25-16, 25-14 and 25-12.
Davina Pry tallied seven kills and five aces in the win while Lily Staab had seven kills and Abbey Jewart 16 assists and three aces.
Stats for Union were not submitted.
Knoch 3, Blackhawk 0 — The Knights downed the Cougars by scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-13.
Karlee Buterbaugh tallied six kills and 13 digs for the Knights (11-4, 6-2). Sabrina Schlott added seven kills while Jess Farbacher had 10 service points and nine digs.
Redbank Valley 3, A-C Valley 0 — Maddy Dehart had eight kills and three blocks for the Falcon Knights (3-11), who dropped this match 25-23, 25-19, 26-24. Bella Ielase contriibuted six kills, Lexi Altman 10 assists and 14 digs, Colleen Verostek 10 digs.
Boys Soccer
Karns City earned a 2-0 victory against DuBois Area, with Braden Slater and Colson Ritzert both finding the net.
Slater and Carter Ritzert had an assist and Lucas Yasika posted the shutout for the Gremlins (10-4-1).
Knoch 16, Leechburg 0 — Kannon Trofimuk had a hat trick while Will Schwalm, Will Parisi, Evan Haas and Austin Friedline each scored twice.
Mason Nebel, Cam Elliot, Jacob Murdie, Jordan Auther and Jacob Fox had one goal for Knoch (10-7, 10-3).
Butler 1, Fox Chapel 0 — Nick Niebauer scored off an assist from Lawson Neigh.
Drew Knight was in goal for the shutout for the Golden Tornado (11-2-3, 8-2-2).
Freeport 5, Derry 0 — No other details were available from this win for the Yellowjackets (8-7, 7-6).
Hockey
Owen Denny scored five goals as Butler opened its season with an 11-1 victory over Montour. Freshman goaltender Corbin Holt had a .928 save percentage.
Butler travels to Indiana on Thursday.
Cross Country
Senior Viktor Zahn placed first by more than a minute to lead Slippery Rock’s boys to a 19-36 victory over Wilmington.
The Rockets also featured the winner of the girls race in freshman Kasey Yeager. The Greyhounds did not field a full team.

Girls Tennis
Third-seeded North Catholic swept Southmoreland, 5-0, in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A team tournament at Cranberry Township Park.
The Trojanettes will face Beaver in a quarterfinal match Thursday at the same venue.
Knoch, the No. 1 seed, received a first-round bye, and will be in action Thursday against Winchester Thurston at Butler High School.
Seneca Valley bowed to third-seeded Mount Lebanon, 5-0, in the first round of the WPIAL 3A Team Tournament on Monday.
The Raiders were seeded 14th in the tourney. Seneca Valley was 10-7 overall this season.
