Hateful comments, actions troubling

It is not OK to harass your neighbor from your car or even on social media.

Recently, a local businessman was accused by a second local businessman of stealing. Facts were reported in the Butler Eagle and on another popular local news and community Facebook page. The alleged theft will be handled in court.

But what happened after it was reported is the real crime. Apparently, members of our community decided to drive by the home of the accused and harass his family — including his pregnant wife and young children. In response, the local Facebook page took down their reporting. It was not the posts or even the alleged actions of the accused that caused the trouble. It was the actions of a hateful few in response to those posts.

I often comment on this same page in support of minority groups that are openly attacked by the anonymous page administrators. I get asked why I do it. The harassment of the young mother and her children is why. The harassment of local youth who may not fit someone else’s gender role definition is why. People yelling from their cars in broad daylight is offensive. And just as offensive are those mean comments quietly made in school, encouraged by those local “news” posts.
