2 ways to improve Pa. primaries

There are two ways Pennsylvania can improve our primaries. First, the state House can quickly pass Senate Bill 22, which would move the 2024 presidential primary from April 23 to March 19.

This move gives Pa. voters more presidential candidate choices. In the past, I missed an opportunity to vote for a candidate eliminated in earlier primary states.

Second, open our primaries.

Out of 50 states, only nine have a closed primary. In open primary states, a registered voter can ask for any available ballot regardless of registration. For example, a Democrat could vote for a Republican or an Independent for a Democrat.

Some would say that is letting people from other parties choose your party candidate. However, independent, unaffiliated and uncommitted voters are eagerly sought by both parties in the general election because neither major party has enough registered voters to elect the president.

In my view, giving more choice in the primary might convince more people to vote, thereby resulting in much better candidates and improved government.
