Unbeaten Westinghouse coming to Butler
BUTLER TWP — Saddled with a three-game losing streak, Butler is uncertain who will be its starting quarterback this Friday.
However, The Golden Tornado are well aware of the calber of their next opponent.
“Westinghouse is as good as ever,” Butler coach Eric Christy said. “They still have all of that speed. In fact, they’re probably faster than they’ve been the last couple of years.”
Westinghouse (5-0) comes to Butler (2-4) for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday at Art Bernardi Stadium. The Bulldogs were 14-1 last season and return nine starters defensively. Only three starters are back offensively.
The Bulldogs defeated Butler, 39-6, last year. They hung a 44-34 loss on the Tornado at Art Bernardi Stadium in 2021.
One of those returnees on offense is running back Taymir Oneal, the team’s leading rusher.
“I’m pretty sure he’s rushed for over 100 yards in every game this year,” fifth-year Westinghouse coach Donta Green said.
While the Tornado are coming off a 55-0 loss at Seneca Valley last week, Westinghouse has wins of 28-0 over Clairton, 52-6 over Perry Traditional Academy, 34-18 over USO, 20-2 over Taylor Allderdice and 30-22 over Hollidaysburg.
Hollidaysburg defeated Butler, 33-13, three weeks ago.
“It’s hard to find any weaknesses in what they’re doing right now,” Christty said. “They have Division 1 prospects in their lineup, they’ve been executing very well and their defense gets to the ball.
“We know how strong Hollidaysburg is this year and they just beat them.”
With Noah Ritchie out this week with an ankle injury and Braylon Littlejohn still unable to play behind center because of a broken finger on his throwing hand, Butler is trying to sort out its quarterback situation. Alec Teff, a junior who started the season opener before going down with a knee injury, returned and played the junior varsity game last Saturday.
“Alec had not played football in a month and is still trying to shake off the mental and physical rust,” Christy said.
Tyson Pino, a sophomore, and freshman Nicholas Baggetta are other QB possibilities. Baggetta played the second half last week after Ritchie got hurt.
Christy said “we’ll see how it goes in practice this week” in terns of naming a starter.
The Tornado’s Terrell Holderman received the team’s Lineman of the Week honor for “playing consistently well on both sides of the ball,” the Butler coach said.
For Westinghouse, running back-defensive back Kyshawn Robinson has received interest from 17 Division 1 universities. Wide receiver Lloyd Penn is headed to Miami of Ohio and defensive lineman Sincere Shannon will be playing at Saint Francis.
Khalil Green, no relation to the team’s head coach, is the Bulldogs’ quarterback.
“He has very modest numbers, really,” Coach Green said. “Our forte is running the ball. Khalil does a nice job of running our offense and getting the ball into the hands of other people.”
Michael Hardy and Raymon Poindexter are four-year starters on the offensive line for the Bulldogs.
“I can never predict how well the opposing team will play against us, but I know Butler is a well-coached, disciplined football team,” Coach Green said. “I’m sure they’ll be ready for us.”
Christy said the Tornado have gone back to basics in terms of tackling drills.
“We’ve gone back to basics on a lot of things,” Christy said. “You have to walk before you can run ... or crawl before you can walk.
“We’re playing a fundamentally sound team. They play a 4-2-5 defense and fly around. They play zone more than man ... You can’t miss tackles against these guys.”
