Eau Claire church crochets hats, scarves for Ukraine

Members of the Eau Claire/Parker Presbyterian Church have been crocheting for months, and have amassed a total of about 80 beanies and scarves.

Patricia Sellers, of Cherry Valley, said she and several other parishioners, including Carol Bowser, Peggy King and the pastor’s wife, Doreen Cline, have made these cold-weather items to send to Ukrainian refugees through a missionary.

“We have already sent 40 items over and we're looking at sending more as soon as we get arrangements made with the missionary,” Sellers said. “Beanies and scarves are being made … to be sent to church missionary Todd Gallagher for refugees who cross into Romania or are in Ukraine.”

According to Sellers, Gallagher is a missionary working in Europe who the church connected with to help fill needs for Ukrainian refugees. In August, Gallagher helped to transport 40 beanies to refugees, and members of the church are preparing another load to send over with him.

Todd said “There is a need for them,” according to Sellers. “We are arranging for getting them over there; the first batch was sent in a suitcase.”

Sellers said members of the church get together to crochet beanies and scarves that will be shipped to Ukraine. While each item takes at least several hours to complete, and several days at most, Sellers said she is motivated to continue crocheting.

“I want to make at least 100,” Sellers said.
