Tornado seek 2nd straight victory
BUTLER TWP — Brashear has been outscored 105-8 in its first two games. Butler coach Eric Christry doesn’t care.
The Golden Tornado football team (1-1) travels to Cupples Stadium in Pittsburgh on Friday night to take on the Bulls, who are coming off losses of 56-0 to Baldwin and 49-8 to Wheeling Park (W.Va.).
“We’ve struggled in road games early in the season and this is a road game early in the season,” Christy said. “Rather than worry about the other team, we need to focus on our own execution of plays and eliminating mistakes.
“We got a win last week, but we shot ourselves in the foot probably 13 or 14 times. We need to clean that stuff up.”
Butler defeated Brashear, 35-22, last year at Art Bernardi Stadium. It marked the first meeting ever between the two football programs.
“When you’re talking about high school kids looking at scores, that’s something you always fight as a coach,” Christy said. “We have to be ready to play. Their offensive and defensive lines are massive human beings ... really, really big. And they have a lot of speed in the skilled positions.
“They’re just not jelling yet. What could go wrong, has gone wrong for them so far. They miss a read, lose a fumble, drop a pass, things like that. Plus, they’ve played a couple of really good teams.”
Brashear coach Andrew Moore said his team has been dealing with a rash of injuries early this season.
“We’ve got three concussions, a separated shoulder, broken hand, some rolled ankles ... It’s been tough,” he said. “We haven’t had our full complement of players on the field for a game yet and we won’t this week, either.”
Brashear did not complete a pass in 14 attemptts against Baldwin. The Bulls only completed a couple of passes last week.
“We’ve struggled in that area,” Moore admitted. “We haven’t had our No. 1 receiver all year and our No. 2 receiver separated his shoulder in the first quarter (of the opener). We’ve had to dig deep down the depth chart.”
The Tornado are coming off a 27-26 win over Meadville last week. With quarterback Alec Teff sidelined with a knee injury, Noah Ritchie started the game behind center for Butler. He was eventually replaced by Braylon Littlejohn, who ran for 161 yards and threw for 74.
Teff could be sidelined three more weeks yet.
“We plan to use both quarterbacks this week,” Christy said of Ritchie and Littlejohn. Both are getting plenty of reps.“
Butler’s Lineman of the Week against Meadville was Terrell Holderman, “who had a great game on both sides of the ball,” Christy said.
Brashear senior quarterback Donovan Meadows has been the Bulls’ leading rusher. Players on the team receiving college looks are running back-middle linebacker Sean Peterson, receiver-free safety Dovea Drewery, defensive end-running back Eric Garcia and two-way lineman Stephen Carroll.
Drewery has been one of the players out with an injury.
“Butler is a well-disciplined group and they fly to the football on defense,” Moore said. “Littlejohn is an exceptional athlete, a great football player.
“We’re telling our kids this is a must-win for us. We need to get some momentum going into conference play.”
