Broken door ‘very inconvenient’ for Butler’s post office

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds, but a broken door is keeping customers from accessing their mailboxes after business hours at Butler’s post office.

Celeste Phillips, delivery supervisor at the post office, said the double door at the Main Street entrance of the Andrew Gomer Williams Post Office has been broken for about six weeks, which was also the estimated time it would take to receive and install replacement doors.

“It’s custom-ordered, and they told us it would take about six weeks to get here,” Phillips said Friday, Aug. 25. “It’s very inconvenient for everyone.”

One door in the set of double doors is held open with a cord strapped to a bar during the day, allowing people to enter the building from that side, but it is closed and locked when the retail section of the office isn’t in service. The door normally is always unlocked so people can access their post office boxes at any time.

Phillips said one of the doors being closed for now could block certain mobility equipment from getting into the building, but the clerks can help someone enter the building, if they call the office when they arrive. The phone number is 724-214-6116.

“The clerks have to come help handicapped folks who can’t get in,” Phillips said. “There is a number on the door for people who need help.”
