No key info of BC3 students found in breach
An investigation into a recent data breach of Butler County Community College did not find any dates of birth or Social Security or student identification numbers provided by BC3, according to the National Student Clearinghouse.
The clearinghouse, which provides reports to institutions of higher education, guaranty agencies, lenders and service providers, reported in July that numerous institutions, including BC3, using the organization’s third-party software program had been compromised.
A Tuesday, Aug. 22, news release from BC3 stated the college’s servers and infrastructure were found not to be compromised, and the college does not use the National Student Clearinghouse’s third-party software program that was breached.
The U.S. Department of Education requires institutions of higher education whose students receive federal financial aid to report enrollment and degree information at least four times each semester. Information includes a student’s name, date of birth, address, Social Security number and program of study.
Because dates of birth or Social Security or student identification numbers provided by BC3 were not compromised, the National Student Clearinghouse stated it need not notify current or former BC3 students.
