The WPIAL’s one-year suspension of former Butler girls basketball coach Jonna Burke has been upheld by the PIAA.

Now the head girls coach at Shady Side Academy — where she posted a 25-4 record last season — Burke was suspended after the WPIAL board of directors ruled she violated the state’s bylaws on recruiting by contacting the parents of a South Fayette player.

The parents were following Burke on Twitter and she responded to them.

The WPIAL board vote was 12-0 to suspend Burke. Her appeal to the PIAA resulted in a 5-0 vote against her there.

Burke is 517-212 in 24 years of high school coaching, including eight years at Butler. She celebrated her 500th career win last season.
