The story of Walnut shows the power of a pet’s love
In the Tuesday edition of the Butler Eagle, we heard the story of Walnut, a miniature dachshund who’s had an outsized impact.
Walnut is owned by Mark Bowman, who owns Slippery Rock contracting firm Man With Tools, and has become a mascot for his business. Bowman discovered what pet owners across time also have discovered: Having a pet is good for you.
There are tangible health benefits to pet ownership. Dogs, in particular, need exercise, so they are a great choice for someone who is looking for a reason to move more.
And studies have consistently shown that the bond between a person and their pet is helpful for everything from lowering blood pressure to decreasing triglyceride levels in the blood to improving mood.
Pets offer us a sense of community, of belonging and of being loved that can benefit our mental and physical health. Many people repay a pet’s devotion with love and affection for the animal itself, but we think Bowman’s idea is worth imitating.
Bowman thinks Walnut is at least partly responsible for the success of his contracting business. And for the second time now, Bowman has made a donation to the Butler County Human Society as a way to express his appreciation for what his relationship with Walnut has given him.
In October and again this month, Bowman donated supplies — including food, grooming supplies, toys and homemade leashes — to the society.
Regardless of whether Walnut has helped Bowman’s success, her presence has made both of their lives happier and more fulfilling. And Bowman has made an effort to provide dogs, cats and other animals still waiting to find a family to go home with the items they need to ensure their proper care and comfort. Bowman, his family and some of his customers made the donations — but as the inspiration, Walnut has earned the title of Very Good Dog.
