Slippery Rock welcomes public input on comprehensive plan

Slippery Rock borough invites residents and students to attend its first public feedback session Sept. 13 regarding its 10-year comprehensive plan.

The comprehensive plan will outline the borough’s goals for the next 10 years. It’s an all-encompassing document, borough manager Christian Laskey said, and at present, is only in its preliminary stage.

Laskey said he hopes the plan will be adopted in spring 2024.

Residents will be able to participate in the feedback event in three ways on Sept. 13. A virtual meeting will take place at noon and an in-person meeting will take place at 6 p.m. in the Alumni House of Slippery Rock University. An online survey also will be available all day on the borough’s website at slipperyrockboroughpa.gov, where people will be able to access the link to the virtual meeting.

“We’re truly trying to give people every single opportunity to say what they can to the community,” Laskey said.

Residents will be able to share their thoughts and ask questions on subjects including business development, economic development, infrastructure, housing, community character, and parks and recreation.

“Even down to the zoning level, what kind of rules and regulations do you want to see?” Laskey said.

“I hope the community becomes involved,” he said. “This isn’t just council sitting down and saying, ‘This is what we want.’ The best-case scenario is to see everybody ... feeling comfortable. We want their input; we want them to voice their opinions.”

The last time a comprehensive plan was implemented in Slippery Rock was in 2007, Laskey said. At the time, the multi-municipal plan involved the borough, Slippery Rock Township, Brady Township, West Liberty borough and Worth Township, he noted.

The upcoming comprehensive plan is specific to Slippery Rock, Laskey said.

Laskey said he hopes the public input will help shape Slippery Rock into an all-encompassing community that welcomes everyone.
