Larry Yartz

Larry J. Yartz, of Meadville, passed away in Erie on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023, after a short illness.

He was born Jan. 29, 1942, to John Yartz Jr. and Lillian A. (Vidic) Yartz in Butler.

Larry graduated from Moniteau High School in May 1960 and earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Slippery Rock State College, graduating summa cum laude. After graduating from Slippery Rock, he was awarded a NASA Fellowship at the University of Oklahoma to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics. He earned a master of arts degree from Oklahoma University in June 1966 in mathematics.

Larry was an assistant professor of mathematics at Allegheny College in Meadville, and served as the treasurer and director of institutional research at Allegheny College from 1978 through January 1996.

In May 1992 Larry founded the Meadville Medical Center Foundation, where he was president and CEO. He retired from that position in January 1999.

Larry was a member of the board of corporators and a board member of the Meadville Area Industrial Commission for more than 40 years. He was also the current president and CEO of the Meadville Housing Corporation since 1988. He was a member of the Meadville Literary Union from 1982 onward.

Larry was elected to the Scientific Research Honor Society Sigma Xi at the University of Oklahoma in 1997.

He married Carolyn R. Weilacher in August 1966. They subsequently lived in Meadville for the rest of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn R. Yartz; daughter, Kristen R. Yartz; son-in-law, Jeremy P. Slade; and granddaughters, Lily M. Slade and Matilda B. Slade, of Dandridge, Tenn.

Larry was preceded in death by an infant son, Derek J. Yartz, born May 25, 1970, who died May 26, 1970.

YARTZ — Family and friends of Larry J. Yartz, who died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023, are invited to call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, 404 Chestnut St., Meadville.

A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at West Sunbury Union Cemetery, Hallston Road, West Sunbury, Butler County.

Memorial contributions may be made in Larry's memory to a charity of the donor's choice.
