Thompson

Curtis Lee Thompson, 68, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 27, 2023, in Newport News, Va.

Born in Butler, on Jan. 30, 1955, he was a man known for his unwavering dedication to his country, family and friends.

Curtis was a graduate of Moniteau High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1975, where he volunteered for submarine duty. After 27 years of honorable service, he retired as a senior chief petty officer in 2002. His dedication to his country extended into his civilian life, where he continued to serve with the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA).

Beyond his professional life, Curtis was an active member of his community. He was a devoted member of the Next Level Church, U.S. Submarine Veterans Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Curtis was a familiar face at St. George's Brewery and enjoyed playing cards at the Villas on Shady Banks. He relished going on frequent Caribbean cruises with his wife, Marilyn, and cherished time spent with their beloved dog, Jett.

Curtis is survived by his wife, Marilyn Marie Sharp Thompson; his son, Joshua (Jessica) Thompson, of Yorktown; his mother, Florence I. Stone Thompson; his sisters, Cheryl (Tom) Cherry, of Freeport, and Terri (Rick) Wagner of West Sunbury; brothers, Bret (Melissa) Thompson, of Huntsville, Texas, Vernon (Linda) Thompson, of West Sunbury, and Neal (Bobby) Thompson, of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; along with numerous loving nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert E. Thompson, and his brothers, Darryl and Keith.

We take comfort in knowing his life was filled with purpose, service and love. His memory will be carried forward by all who knew him.
