Upcoming running races pack schedule
So many races, so little time. With most summer weekends packed with races, organizers are turning to evenings as less crowded and potentially cooler events. You could try to race all three or choose one or two of these weekend options.
All Saints Parish Twilight 5k and 1-Mile Fun Run returns to Meridian’s St. Conrad Church this Friday for its second year with an out-and-back 1-mile at 7 p.m., followed by a 5k jaunt through Butler Farm Show grounds at 7:30. Father Kevin Fazio of All Saints Parish, an avid runner, calls the course “interesting but not difficult.”
Twilight 5k offers competitive runners a chance to win overall awards for first three men and women and first three in age groups from 10-and-under through 60+ or to compete for first overall hand cycle award. The 1-mile trek welcomes all runners and walkers, but rewards first three overall male and female finishers and age groups from 4-and-under through 13-14.
The Twilight 5k and 1-Mile honors the memories of Butler Catholic School graduates Sarah Kasunic and Emily Leyland, who lost their lives too soon to an accident and an illness, respectively. As race organizer Katie Johnson says, the two “made life more beautiful for the many people they touched during their short time on this earth.”
Proceeds from the event and sponsor donations help fund a scholarship in their names for students from pre-school through 8th grade to attend Butler Catholic School.
Sports should be fun. That’s the theme of the 18th Annual John Cossy Costantino 5k and 10k in Freeport this Saturday. The run is held in conjunction with Freeport International Baseball Invitational.
Day-of-event registration opens at 7:30 a.m. at the starting area at Freeport Junior High School. Both the 5k run/walk and the 10k start at 9 a.m. in front of the school and finish on the outfield of James Swartz Memorial Field, site of the Invitational’s baseball games this week.
This race began years ago as a 5k with a 10k option added in 2021. Both distances follow the same course which winds through the small river town of Freeport. The 10k breaks away at the 2-mile water stop for a scenic detour out and back on Butler-Freeport Community Trail. The course is accessible for runners, walkers, dogs and kids in strollers, but traffic will open along the course at noon.
In the spirit of Freeport International Baseball’s motto, “For the Love of the Game,” there are no competitive awards in the running events. Instead, participants gather post-race on the baseball bleachers to share in a random drawing for numerous prizes.
All participants are welcome to stay for the first baseball game of the day at 11 a.m. There is a full slate of games, including an All-Star Game at 8 p.m. followed by fireworks at 10 p.m.
Running with deer flies doesn’t sound like much fun, but Run with the Deer Flies 15k and 25k certainly is. The challenging 15th annual event runs Sunday through Yellow Creek State Park with an elevation gain of more than 2,000 feet for the 25k on single-track trails, pipeline roads and hills and through swamps and creek crossings.
There will be aid stations every four miles along the course. Carrying water is recommended, even though temperatures may be cooler by Sunday. Camping on Saturday night in Seph Mac Boy Scout Camp on the North Shore of Yellow Creek State Park is free.
It may be too late to receive a commemorative T-shirt, but Deer Flies rewards every finisher with a medal and a commemorative deer fly swatter and all are eligible to win random drawing prizes. Day-of-event registration opens at 6:30 a.m. for the 8 a.m. start.
Indiana Road Runners Club, organizers of Run with the Deer Flies, also conduct a shorter and milder race on August 12 in Dilltown. Run for the Trail 7k and 2-Mile Fun Run/Walk runs out and back on the Ghost Town Trail. For more information, visit www.indianaroadrunners.com.
