Take inspiration from McKenna and support veterans when you can

A 12-year-old from Butler County recently donated $1,200 to the Wounded Warrior Project.

“She didn't like how (veterans) sacrificed their lives, and she felt they don't get enough appreciation and help,” said McKenna’s mother, Natalie, in an article published in Monday’s Eagle.

While she could have bought a new bike, video games or even stashed her savings away for a later purpose, McKenna saw a need and did everything she could to help fill it. For three years, she saved toward this purpose.

Her goal was to raise $1,000, and the money came from completing household chores and cash she received as gifts for her birthday and holidays.

She toppled the goal, raising $1,200.

The Wounded Warrior Project, which has a mission to “honor and empower wounded warriors” began in 2003 and has since become an organization with programs centered on mental health, career counseling, long-term rehabilitative care and more for veterans and their families.

These are people who sacrificed their time and talents — and in some scenarios, nearly their lives — to protect our country.

Like McKenna, we should support them in any way we can.

As McKenna wraps up her campaign, she says she’d do it all again.

We encourage others to follow her shining example and support veterans. Donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
