Honoring veterans in Mars

The idea to honor veterans with a series of banners along the streets in Mars isn’t a novel idea, but it is a program that we consider worthy of praise.

The initiative comes as an effort to enhance downtown Mars and honor those who have served.

Mars Borough Council discussed the proposal at its Monday, July 10, meeting and expressed intentions to approve the program as soon as July 24. The program would be brought to fruition with the help of the Mars Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The idea is that residents could sponsor a banner that would be hung from Memorial Day in May through Veterans Day in November. After that, each banner would be taken down and given to the person who covered its cost.

In November 2021, we wrote about banners coming to Adams Township. The township had announced its plan to add the banners, which display the face and name of a military veteran, at its Community Park.

In May 2022, our team spotted a Butler Area High School senior hanging these banners along Herman Road in Summit Township. The banners were hung directly before Memorial Day.

That project was organized by Garret Kamerer to earn his Eagle Scout rank, we reported at that time.

These banners honoring military members can be spotted on a drive down Butler’s Main Street or through many other Butler County townships and boroughs, too.

We are proud of efforts taken within Butler County to honor our veterans. We applaud the efforts by Mars to bring this effort to life.
