Police: Man used counterfeit $50 bills in Cranberry stores

A New York man is accused of passing counterfeit bills at businesses in Cranberry Township and surrounding counties, police said.

Christopher K. Aiken, 29, of Brooklyn, was charged Saturday, July 8, with felony forgery and misdemeanors criminal attempt of theft and possession of an instrument with criminal intent.

He was placed in Butler County Prison in lieu of $75,000 bail.

On Friday, July 7, Cranberry Township police said they responded to Best Buy on Cranberry Square Drive for a report of counterfeit bills.

Employees told officers that two men presented $850 in $50 bills for a purchase.

The men received change and their items and left in a white Jeep, but the bills turned out to be counterfeit, police said.

The vehicle was spotted at Lowe’s, and one of the men was identified as Aiken. He attempted to use $700 in counterfeit $50s to make two purchases, police said.

Police said an employee refused the sale and kept the bills, and Aiken and the other man left the store.

Ross Township police then located the Jeep and Aiken at Target on McKnight Road in Pittsburgh.

Cranberry Township police said they arrived on scene and discovered that Aiken had 16 counterfeit $50 bills in his left front pocket.

Aiken’s preliminary hearing before District Judge Kevin Flaherty is scheduled July 21.
