Darlene (Patterson) Kay, of Butler, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2023.

Darlene loved being a military wife to Charles Kay and the mother of four sons. She especially enjoyed exploring new horizons as we moved around the globe, including assignments in Georgia, New Jersey, Bermuda, Florida, Montana, Colorado, Germany and Ohio, always calling Pennsylvania home. Over the years, Dee worked inside the home raising their sons and worked outside the home at Piggly Wiggly and at the Defense Commissary Service, where she began to transition her career to one of federal service. She retired as an executive secretary at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

While she self-assessed as shy and quiet, she engaged strangers and built deep relationships along the way. Most recently her closest friendships were at Unionville Evangelical Presbyterian Church, her church Bible study and Unionville Quilters, which she enjoyed very much until illness reduced her outings. She participated in a ladies monthly pinochle group in Germany, where she frequently won Hummel figurines as prizes.

She and Dad enjoyed playing cards with friends and family over the years, including at the Unionville Grange. Darlene valued family closely and built strong bonds with Dad’s family, as well as her caring sisters and their families. Mum’s sons, Russell Alan, Daniel Carl, Gregg Stevenson and Thomas Lee, will miss her deeply yet are relieved her suffering is past and she is at peace. They will see to her wishes to be shared with Dad, Grandma and Grandpa Patterson, Grandma and Grandpa Kay and the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Darlene’s survivors include sisters (twin), Arlene Young, Anna King and Joyce Novosat; one brother, Robert G. Patterson; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; son, Thomas; sister, Nancy (Patterson) Dillaman; and other loved ones.

KAY — Arrangements are under the direction of YOUNG FUNERAL HOME, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler.
