Freeport baseball wins pitchers’ duel

FREEPORT — The teams combined for three hits, but Freeport managed to secure a 2-1 Butler County Area Baseball League victory over East Butler recently.

Matt Corfield was the winning pitcher, striking out 10 and allowing only two hits. Jacob Wagner tossed a one-hitter for East Butler, fanning six. Zack Clark singled home Jon Hotalski for the deciding run in the sixth inning.

Wagner singled and scored on a Cody Fike single for East Butler in the fourth inning. Freeport’s first run was unearned.

3 county athletes honored at Thiel

GREENVILLE — Three former Butler County athletes were among the 69 Thiel College student athletes receiving berths on the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Spring 2023 Academic Honor Roll.

Karns City graduate Brooke Griffith is a track and field athlete studying Pyschology Social Track, Public Policy. Karns City graduate Cole Sherwin is on the baseball team and is studying Computer Science, Data Analytics. Seneca Valley graduate Madi Yurich is a track and field athlete studying Communication Sciences and Disorders.
