American Legion Post 117 hosted a flag retirement and folding ceremony Saturday in the legion’s parking lot at 413 S. Main St., Butler. The event was conducted in partnership with Boy Scout Troop 39 of Meridian. The Scouts cut each flag into 13 strips, soaked them in kerosene and lit them on fire — which is the proper way to retire a flag, according to Gordon Kennedy, a 23-year Legion member.
