Moniteau softball stays alive with win

BROCKWAY — Emily Staab hit a two-run inside-the-park homer late in the game and Mariska Shunk got the victory in relief Monday as Moniteau defeated Johnsonburg, 7-3, in a District 9 2A consolation softball game at Brockway.

The Warriors (13-10) trailed early before rallying for the win. Emma Covert pitched the first three innings for Moniteau before Shunk tossed the final four frames to get credit for the win.

That win — coupled by Cranberry’s 7-6 D-9 2A championship game victory over Curwensville — gives Moniteau a chance to play itself into the PIAA Tournament. Moniteau plays Curwensville at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Brockway for the district’s second PIAA qualifying spot.

Brianna Rottman had two singles for the Warriors on Monday. Lily Staab added a double and Emily Staab had three hits in as many at-bats, including the two-run homer that doubled Moniteau’s lead.
