Under a sunny sky on a Saturday afternoon, a crowd of about 200 people watched Moraine State Park’s dedication ceremony on May 23, 1970, which culminated in the release of 100 mallard ducks into the park.

Lt. Gov. Raymond J. Broderick spoke at the ceremony, saying that he and everyone in attendance were fortunate to see a development as large as the creation of a new state park.

The state department of forests and waters contracted for a feasibility study for a recreational/conservation reservoir based on a study by Frank Preston in 1957. The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy in 1951 urged the creation of an impoundment by the study and began acquiring properties to create the 15,000-acre park.

“You ladies and gentlemen are most fortunate to see with your own eyes what men can do to make the world better,” Broderick said.
