Vera Widenhofer grabbed a paper towel to wipe off the book box one last time before dedicating it to Mount Chestnut Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, May 23.

The 5-year-old from Center Township was part of the Girl Scout troop that donated a book box to the church as part of a community service project. Each of the six girls in Troop 16845 earned their community service badge when they dedicated the old newspaper box.

“I put a notebook in there,” Vera said. “I put a couple stickers on.”

Amanda Gibson, leader of Troop 16845, said the troop had done some other work with the church for other badges recently, and the book box was an end-of-year project for them.

Gibson said the donation of a book box is a way for the girls to not only work on their artistic skills, but also share books they enjoy with others.

The box offers “wisdom, education and adventure for all ages and all interests,” Gibson said.

The old newspaper box was donated by the Butler Eagle, painted by Cammisa's Autobody and ultimately designed by the girls of the troop, who also will maintain it and keep it stocked with books, Gibson said. Many of the books were given by members of the troop, but the United Way also gave them some books to stock the shelves.

Gibson said the box will remain outside the church for anyone to get books or give them.
