Nancy Sutton
Nancy Lee Sutton, 88, of Butler, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, in her son’s home in Haltom City, Texas, while under hospice care. She was visiting with her son’s family and was able to visit with her oldest Texas granddaughter and her great-granddaughter before she was admitted to the hospital with complications due to a stroke.
Born Oct. 31, 1934, in Marwood, she was the daughter of Kenneth William Hesselgesser and Ruth Evelyn Freehling Hesselgesser.
Nancy was a multi-talented woman who delighted in being a friend to many and serving others.
She was a graduate of Winfield-Clinton High School. She received her Bachelor of Music Education from Indiana State Teachers College in 1956, and married the love of her life, James Edison Sutton Jr., that same year. She received her Master’s in Communication from Wheaton College in 1986.
She was employed at the Evans City School as a music teacher, and later at the Wheaton College Instructional Media Technology Department in Illinois. After her husband retired, they moved to Ocala, Fla., where she was chair (four years) and an active member of the Ocala Christian Women’s Club. After the death of her husband and daughter, she moved back to Pennsylvania, where she served as the conductor for the Brotherhood singing group.
She delighted in hosting family and friends in her home throughout her married life and continued to host family and friends in her home after her return to Pennsylvania. She recently retired as the church pianist at Middlesex Presbyterian Church in Butler, after 20 years of faithful service.
She leaves behind family and friends who will cherish her memory including her sister, Mary Jo McGrath; three sons, James E. Sutton III and his wife, Rachel, of Haltom City, Texas, David E. Sutton of Clintonville, Pa., and Lorin P. Sutton and his wife, Regina, of Clovis, Calif.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many lifelong friends she held dear in her life.
In addition to her parents, Kenneth William Hesselgesser and Ruth Evelyn Freehling Hesselgesser, Nancy was preceded in death by her daughter, Lisa Ann Sutton; her husband, James E. Sutton Jr.; and her sister, Beverly A. McClaine.
SUTTON — Friends of Nancy Lee Sutton, who died Tuesday, May 9, 2023, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at BOYLAN FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTER OF CONNOQUENESSING TOWNSHIP, 856 Evans City Road, Renfrew.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Kevin M. Bowen officiating.
Burial will be at Evans City Cemetery in Evans City.
