Shaler sweeps Mars, Planets 3rd in section

Miguel Hugas singled and scored in the first inning, then made that run stand up on the mound in a 1-0 section baseball win over Mars on Thursday.

Hugas tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out seven.

Jackson Fox was the hard-luck loser for the Planets, striking out four and permitting just five hits. Derek Leas had three of those hits for Shaler (13-4, 8-1), including a double and RBI.

The teams completed section play against each other on Friday, the Titans (14-4, 9-1) scoring a 7-4 win at Mars. Ben Astbury led the Planets (9-8, 5-5) with three singles. Owen Smith had a double, single and three RBI, Chase Winstead a single and RBI for Mars.

The Planets and West Allegheny tied for third in Section 3-5A, the Planets getting the edge by sweeping WA in their two-game regular season series.

Softball

Lexie Hames had another dominant day in the circle as Seneca Valley defeated Canon-McMillan, 5-1. The Raiders improved to 13-1 overall, 12-1 in section play.

Canon-McMillan slipped to 5-10, 4-9. Seneca Valley hosts Butler on Monday.

Indiana 7, Knoch 3 — The Knights fell short in their final section matchup, but also earned the WPIAL Section 1-4A title.

Western Beaver 14, Mars 9 — The Planets fell to 6-8 overall, 4-5 in section play. Western Beaver improved to 6-7, 3-5. Mars hosts Highlands on Monday.
