From now on, whenever citizens pick up or send out their mail, or simply pass by what was once simply known as the Butler Post Office, they will be reminded of what it means to be a true American patriot.

The post office located on South Main Street will now carry the name of Andrew Gomer Williams, a native of Butler who served with distinction in the Civil War before becoming as a lawyer in Butler during the later stages of his life.

The renaming was made official at a dedication ceremony at the post office Friday, May 5. Among those attending were U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly (R-16th), Pastor David Janz of Butler First Methodist Church and Eddie Masangcay, U.S. Postal Serivce district manager for Pennsylvania, and Williams’ surviving great-granddaughter, Caroline Hunt.

Andrew Williams was an officer in the 63rd Pa. Infantry during the Civil War, but he has never received a military headstone. Paperwork is being filed with the Veterans Affairs department to change that.In April 2022, U.S. Rep.
