3 county athletes get Collins Awards
PITTSBURGH — Beaux Lizewski of Seneca Valley, Cassidy Dell of Freeport and Gwen Howell of Mars are among the 20 student-athletes receiving WPIAL/James Collins Scholar-Athlete Awards this year.
There was a pool of 162 applicants for this year’s honors.
Dell was a four-year letterwinner and captain in Freeport girls volleyball, maintaining a 4.52 grade point average. She is a two-time all-state player and was named MVP of the state championship match. She plans to pursuer a degree in occupational therapy and play volleyball at Messiah University.
Howell was a four-year letterwinner in soccer and served as team captain for the Planets, maintaining a 4.66 GPA. She was named all-state and All-WPIAL twice and helped Mars win three WPIAL and PIAA titles. She plans to pursue a degree in the medical field or psychology and play soccer at the University of Richmond.
Lizewski was a four-year letterwinner in soccer and two-year letterwinner in basketball. He was soccer team captain, maintaining a 5.27 GPA. He plans to pursue a degree in international relations.
DeJidas gets 7 RBI in twinbill sweep
ERIE — Freeport graduate Allison DeJidas collected three doubles and seven RBI for Mercyhurst University in a recent 5-2, 8-5 doubleheader sweep of Slippery Rock.
DeJidas had a pair of two-run doubles in the first game and a three-run double in the nightcap. Mercyhurst is 23-17 overall this season, 13-9 in conference play.
