Butler Invitational set for Friday
BUTLER TWP — The 58th annual Butler Track and Field Invitational takes place Friday at Art Bernardi Stadium, beginning with the 3,200-meter relay finals at 11 a.m.
This year’s event features 78 teams and more than 2,000 athletes. Notable participating programs include Aliquippa, Baldwin, host Butler, Fox Chapel, Freeport, Greensburg Salem, Grove City, Indiana, Mars, Moon, Mohawk, Norwin, North Allegheny, Obama Academy, Pine-Richland, Punxsutawney and Slippery Rock.
In the girls meet, Butler’s Megan Baggetta is the No. 1 seed in the triple jump at 38 feet, 11.5 inches. The Golden Tornado’s Grace Nichols is among four girls tied for the top seed in the high jump at 5 feet, 3 inches.
On the boys side, Slippery Rock’s Levi Prementine is the top seed in the 300-meter hurdles at 39.99 seconds. Butler’s Landon Lacey is the top seed in the 400 meters at 49.83 and Mars’ Jacob Thompson is top seed in the 200 meters at 22.05.
Union-A-C Valley's Hayden Smith is the No. 1 seed in the high jump at 6 feet, 9 inches. Butler has the top two seeds in the long jump in Ryan Porch and Luke Campbell. The Golden Tornado are also top-seeded in all three relays.
“We are really excited about the quality that our meet continues to attract,” Butler girls coach and co-meet director John Williams said. “It’s now the mid-season point — when you come to the Butler Invitational — you know you are going to see some of the best competition in Pennsylvania.”
