Seneca Valley considers grants

JACKSON TWP — Three grants of widely varying origins will be voted upon by the Seneca Valley School Board at its meeting next week.

The board will consider approving a $46,000 Gladys Brooks Foundation Grant requested by teachers Annie Mersing and Angela Kotula.

If approved and received, the grant will be used to host annual presentations for students in grades eight through 12 on online safety, the dangers of the internet, and the importance of digital citizenship.

Another grant, if received, would provide a $20,000 stipend for a school psychology intern who is studying for a master’s or doctoral degree.

Jeff Roberts, director of student services at Seneca Valley, explained that the district’s special education instructors are concerned about a future shortage of school psychologists.

He said he hopes he can locate an eligible student to serve as an intern, as postgraduate students in school psychology are sometimes hard to find.

The board also will vote on a $2,000 grant that, if received, will pay for kindergarten curriculum to help transition students by reinforcing reading before entering school-age programs.

Also at Monday night’s meeting, board members heard Serenity Vincent of the Seneca Valley Orchestra Parents Association share the association’s contention that more orchestra teachers are needed.

Vincent said school districts of a similar size in the region have three orchestra teachers in their secondary school programs compared to one at Seneca.

She said the district has more than 200 students in orchestra and 80-plus members in the parents association.

The board did not act on the addition of orchestra teachers.
