David Daugherty
David C. Daugherty passed away at his home in Cleveland, Ohio, on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2023. He was born on July 30, 1955, in Butler, and was the son of the late John A. Daugherty and the late Clare M. Fleeger Daugherty Miller. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, John Daugherty and Conrad Daugherty; and a sister, Karen Daugherty McJunkin.
David is survived by his sister, Rebecca (Jeff) Simmons of Butler; and her sons, James (Danielle) Adams of Greensburg, and Christopher Adams of Butler. He also is survived by a sister-in-law, E'Lane Daugherty of Butler; as well as nieces and nephews, including John (Jeannie) Daugherty of Fremont, Calif., Ellen (Jeff) Daugherty of Memphis, Tenn., Scott (Kim) Daugherty of Prospect, Connie Sue (Jake) Pisor of New Castle and Sharon (Eric) Bintrim of New Castle.
David was an accomplished pipe organist, choir director, vocal coach, conductor and baritone who received an education from Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University, as well as Carnegie Mellon University. He served as a musician in many capacities throughout his career.
David began his musical career at age 15, as organist of the former Calvary Church on the Diamond in Butler. He walked there from the Junior High School to practice after school! He went on to serve as director of music/organist at a number of churches throughout his life, including Covenant United Presbyterian Church, First United Methodist Church, Ingomar United Methodist Church, Northmont United Presbyterian Church, Hill United Presbyterian Church, The First Presbyterian Church, Germantown, Pa., and most recently The Old Stone Church, Cleveland, Ohio.
David was very knowledgeable about organ renovation, as he worked as a pipe organ salesman and renovation consultant early in his career. He went on to help many churches choose appropriate renovations, extending the life and quality of their instruments.
As a vocal coach, many of his students went on to pursue a variety of professional careers, including singing at the Metropolitan Opera.
David also served as musical director, choral director and conductor in a number of Butler Musical Theatre Guild shows, and also performed with MTG.
DAUGHERTY — A celebration of life service for David C. Daugherty, who died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2023, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Covenant United Presbyterian Church, 230 E Jefferson St., Butler. It will also be available on YouTube @ CovenantTV1813.
A private burial of his ashes will take place at St. Peter's Cemetery at a later date.
