Sloboda in semifinals; Griffith shatters mark
Butler freshman Santino Sloboda advanced to the semifinals at 107 pounds during action Friday at the PIAA Wrestling Championships, takling place at the Giant Center in Hershey.
Sloboda (39-1) decisioned Northwest regional champion Braiden Weaver of Altoona, 4-2, in the quarterfinal round. He will wrestle Southeast champion Keanu Dillard (24-0) of Bethlehem Catholic in the semifinal round Saturday morning.
Seneca Valley’s Tyler Chappell dropped a 9-4 decision to State College’s Hayden Cunningham in the 127-pound quarterfinals. Chappell then took a 6-1 defeat in the consolation round at the hands of Eren Sement of Council Rock North.
Connor Smith, the Raiders’ 114-pounder, has won a pair of matches in the consolation round. He decisioned Drew Scherer of Boiling Springs,. 5-2, and Cole McFarland of Haverford, 3-0.
Track and Field
Butler junior Drew Griffith placed fourth in the 3,200 meters Friday at the New Balance National Championships in Boston — and did so in fashion.
Griffith ran the event in 8 minutes, 48.01 seconds, less than five seconds behind champion Connor Burns of Southern Boone High School in Missouri. Griffith’s time was the third fastest by a high school junior in United States history. He shattered the previous school record of 9:02.23 — set by CJ Singleton during the national meet in New York two years ago — by 14 seconds.
Griffith’s time was also the 11th fastest two-mile time in U.S. high school history. He earned All-American status Friday.
Basketball
Remi Black scored 21 points and Ryan Ceh added 16 as Mars advanced in the PIAA 5A tournament with a 61-49 win at Manheim Central. Tasso Sfanos was limited to six points. Grube led Manheim Central with 18 points.
The Planets had a 33-21 lead by halftime.
Union 64, Turkeyfoot 28 — The Golden Knights cruised to victory in the PIAA 1A playoffs as Payton Johnston scored 22 points and Zander Laughlin netted 20. Union outscored Turkeyfoot 22-5 in the second quarter to break the game open.
Chris Kozlowski led Turkeyfoot with 12 points.
